Visual Dictionary of Photography – review

May 16, 2011

Although this book by Prakel (independent scholar) is designed as a dictionary of photography, it is an ideal starter text for beginning photographers, and a useful quick reference for more advanced photographers. In many ways the work is a bridge between film photography and digital photography. Many of the entries cover film and photo-paper developing, which is rapidly becoming obsolete. But many entries address the new techniques evolving with digital photography. The work contains a rather limited index, but no bibliography (which would have been useful). The illustrations are very high quality, and very useful to understanding the text. This visual dictionary excels at explaining some of the more confusing concepts of photography. The explanation of “JPEG” is a good example of the book’s ability to reduce a complicated process to understandable terms. Other definitions are equally well done and clearly explained. While not aimed at the professional photographer, this dictionary is an indispensable purchase for amateur and advanced photographers, and for public and academic library collections. Overall, it is a useful reference work that should be of great use to a variety of readers.

Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower- and upper-level undergraduates, two-year technical program students, and general readers.
